Tiger Woods is World #2After over five years as the official World #1 of golf, Tiger Woods has finaly been toppled from the top spot by Vijay Singh. Maybe this will be the catalyst he needs to return to winning form and, let's face it, that's not a huge step from how he is playing right now. The change at the top has been long overdue and Woods has only maintained his position over the last few months by using the system, which rewards golfers for staying at home rather than playing, to his advantage. But don't write him off. I have no doubt that Woods will be back in the number one spot and my guess is that it will be sooner rather than later. Although this has been the main talking point in the golf world, there were other events last week which are worth a mention. Just as Stewart Cink went out the week after receiving his captain's pick for the Ryder Cup and won his second tournament of the season, Bernard Langer's second pick, Luke Donald, has gone out and done the same. A five stroke victory at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland was a fine way to thank his captain and show any doubters that his selection was justified. On the Champions Tour, Craig Stadler notched up his fourth win of the season, a feat which he hasn't achieved since 1982, the year he won the Masters. Back then, his total winnings for the season were $446,462. This year he has already earned over $2 million and heads the Champions Tour money list as well leading the Charles Schwab Cup points list which awards a $1million annuity to the winner. This week is the last week before the Ryder Cup and while the majority of the European Team are in Germany playing alongside their captain at the Linde German Masters, it was announced that one of the key members of the USA team, Phil Mickelson, has decided to change his clubs. Callaway Golf announced this week that Mickelson has signed a long term contract to use their equipment, starting this week at the Bell Canadian Open. Tiger Woods made his move to Nike the week before the 2002 Ryder Cup and won the WGC-American Express Championship the same week. Let's see how Phil gets on with his new clubs and balls in Canada this week. Coincidentally, both players were previously using Titleist equipment prior to their moves. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - While I am on my vacation (I'll be back in time for the Ryder Cup), I am only writing my editorial article instead of individual reports on each of the tournaments but I have still included last week's top ten results, money lists and world rankings as well a new "Off the Cart Path" cartoon strip. Enjoy. That's all for now. Have a great week, on and off the course. Regards Andy Smith |
