McDonald's LPGA Championship
Dupont Country Club, Wilmington, Delaware
June 10-13, 2004 |
| Annika Retains LPGA Championship |
|
| Annika Sorenstam may not win all four LPGA majors this season
as she had hoped, but missing out on the first one hasn't lessened her resolve to reaffirm
her dominance of Ladies Golf. She held a slim one stroke lead after 36 holes when the
weather prevented play on Saturday and left her facing another Sunday marathon at the
McDonald's LPGA Championship. Last year she lifted the trophy after 34 holes on the final
day and this year she retained her title thanks mainly to her Sunday morning third round
of 7-under par 64. Sorenstam's one over par final round of 72 in the afternoon was more
than enough to ward off the challange from runner-up, rookie, Shi Hyun Ahn who never got
closer than 2 shots. Ahn's final round 66 left her three shots behind Sorenstam's winning
total of 271. This was Annika Sorenstam's seventh major title and the third of the four
majors that she has retained. Her winnings take her over the $1million mark for the 2004
season. |

Overnight rain and gale force winds on Saturday night toppled television
towers and scattered debris over the Kansas City course making play on Sunday impossible.
The damage was so severe that the organizers reduced the Bayer Advantage Celebrity Pro-Am
to 36 holes and presented the trophy to Allen Doyle who held the lead after two rounds.
Rounds of 65 and 66 gave Doyle his first victory of 2004 by one shot over Champions Tour
"Rookie" Jerry Pate who had been hoping for the chance to secure his first title
since turning 50 at the end of 2003. This victory makes it nine wins on the Champions
Tour for 57 year old Doyle. His earnings move him up into the top ten on the 2004
Champions Tour Money List. |
