Toms Retains St. Jude Title

Even as the highest ranked player in the field, David Toms had a lot to prove at the FedEx St. Jude Classic last week. After undergoing wrist surgery in December, he has had a less than impressive start to this season, with only two cuts made from his last seven starts prior to this tournament. But the defending champion came back to form and retained his title in style with a six shot victory, equalling Chad Campbell's 2004 Tour best winning margin at Bay Hill.
Toms started the day with a seven stoke lead and it was clear that, in the windy conditions, there would not be many low scores. He set himself a target of even par and in the end, a two over par round of 73 was more than enough to secure his first victory since he won this title in 2003. With Toms out of reach the battle was on for second place. Bob Estes claimed the runner-up spot with a round of 69, two under par, giving him a 10 under par total of 274.

But it came down to the final hole. Tim Herron came to the 18th hole in second place, one shot ahead of Estes, but his bogey put them in a tie on minus 9. In the following group, Estes, who had pitched in for eagle on 16, made his birdie on 18 to leave him clear of Herron and Steve Lowery who also earned a share of third place.
Lowery's four under par round of 67, Sunday's best score, was the only bogey-free round of the day and one of only 13 sub-par rounds. His tied third place was his first top-ten finish of 2004.

Stewart Cink (69), Brian Gay (73), Vaughn Taylor (74) and Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson (69) tied for fifth place, one shot further back on 276.
